Chronology of a lifetime

We know a few precise facts about the life of Tinco Lycklama. He was born into an established family whose genealogy goes back many centuries, and whose political roles and vast possessions are well documented. In 1865-1868, Tinco undertook an adventurous voyage and published the details of his itinerary in a 2,200-page, 4-volume opus. He moved to France, but remained one of the highest tax-payers in The Netherlands. He offered the city of Cannes his collection of oriental objects – and thus its first municipal museum – and is considered one of the city’s great benefactors. We know where Tinco was born, where he married, where he died, and where he was buried.

Still, so many questions remain. What about…

  • His studies, purportedly in Utrecht, Groningen, Paris…
  • His conversion from the reformed church to catholicism…
  • His social life in Cannes, his friends, his network of contacts…
  • His business dealings, his associates…
  • His travels – beyond his ‘grand voyage’…
  • His relationship to his family and in-laws…

Through further research, we seek to gain a more complete picture of the enigmatic Tinco.
